Lagos-born, South London-based Afro-pop riser RaysMuzik delivers his vibrant cut “Hmm Hmm” – releasing via The Orchard.
Setting the contemporary African music scene ablaze with potent lyricism and an affinity for classic Afrobeat sound waves, RaysMuzik’s dystopian approach is on full display across his latest offering. Bursting with punchy percussion and spacey synths, the sharp backing lays the perfect foundation for the Nigeran singer, songwriter and performer to flex his eclectic vocal range with typical finesse.
A melodic intimacy shines front and centre as he envisions his ideal partner and the intoxicating desires that take control when true love dissolves into lust. Moving with purpose and persistence while embodying the essence of his home nation, “Hmm Hmm” will continue the hype surrounding one of the most exciting vocalists emerging across the landscape.
Speaking on the record, RaysMuzik mentions: “I wrote this song to showcase how tough and tasking falling in love / staying in love with your partner can sometimes be. I wrote this piece to an instrumental I found on YouTube and recorded the demo as an
acapella, and sent it over to the GC. Somehow it got sent to Skitter who took the composition to another level with his production, so definitely a big S/O goes out to him for that."
Born in Lagos before moving to South London, RaysMuzik was exposed to vibrant influences across music, community and culture which have been integral in his musical journey. Paired with a vigorous work ethic while pursuing a degree in Accounting and Financing, the young talent developed his grippingly unique artistry with local performances throughout his city, taking inspiration from the budding Afro-pop scene that started to spread across international borders.
After the release of his debut record “My Girl” in 2016, the rising talent delivered a stream of infectious singles including “For Me” and “Bebe” (300K streams), all building towards an incendiary collaboration with London superstar Kojo Funds across his Afro-swing heater “For You”. 2019 saw RaysMuzik receive breakout status after being nominated for Best Newcomer at the AFRIMMA Awards, which then led to his key single “Young” with Grammy-nominated producer Mr Kleb (Burna Boy) and critical tastemaker support with the likes of COMPLEX, GRM DAILY, BBC 1XTRA, CAPITAL XTRA and RINSE FM – announcing a significant prospect on the verge of mainstream realisation.
With a plethora of releases confirmed to come, RaysMuzik’s authentic artistry will no doubt bring him further column inches this year. A true multi-hyphenate talent, mark the Lagos native as a serious one to watch.
