Apple have said that they are to support Dr Dre after he made an apology to the “women he has hurt” in a statement to The New York Times. Dre made the apology after music journalist Dee Barnes wrote an article on how Dre assaulted her in 1991 but yet this was not mentioned in Straight Outta Crompton - a movie about his former rap group N.W.A. – Dre pleaded no contest to a charge of assault and battery and was sentenced to community service, probation and ordered to pay a fine and make a PSA about domestic violence.
In the post, Dee Barnes wrote “When I was sitting there in the theatre, and the movie’s timeline skipped by my attack without a glance, I was like, ‘Uhhh, what happened?”. Dr Dre acknowledged her disappointment and said in the statement “a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure. I apologise to the women I’ve hurt, I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives“.
Apple responded to Dre’s apology and said in a statement ”Dre has apologised for the mistakes he’s made in the past and he’s said that he’s not the same person that he was 25 years ago, after working with him for a year and a half, we have every reason to believe that he has changed“. Apple bought Dre’s Beats Electronics last year for $3 Billion and also made him an executive.
