GADGETS: Tap and you're done! Every shop in Europe will take contactless payments by 2020

Don't worry about remembering your PIN – every shop in Europe will accept contactless payments in five years, according to MasterCard.

That means you can just tap your debit or credit card – or your phone – on the terminal to pay. No more PINs or signing for us.

The firm shared details of its plans for the technology. "Last year we set out a couple of standards for the industry to try and achieve universal contactless acceptance across Europe within a sensible timescale," Mike Cowan, MasterCard's head of emerging payment methods, told TrustedReviews.

"From the beginning of next year, any new payment terminal that gets deployed has to accept contactless. This is giving us a universal footprint where people will be able to use their phones to pay for stuff in this way.

"By 2020, every single terminal will accept contactless."

Contactless has rolled out in 22 countries across Europe. By 2019, MasterCard estimates a whopping 195 billion transactions will be made every year using contactless on mobile devices.

If only Apple Pay could make its way to these shores, we could join in the fun.
