It’s been a breathtaking ride for the affable singer/songwriter, who hails from the rural Jamaican parish of Clarendon, located right outside of Kingston. Growing up with a passion for music and art, he met Jamaican music mentor/producer Clifton ‘Specialist’ Dillon in 2009, and the two formed a special creative relationship, with Dillon (Shabba Ranks, Patra, Alborosie, Ky-mani Marley) setting up OMI with his own studio in Kingston. “Cheerleader” was originally released in 2012, taking off in Jamaica and Hawaii first. In 2014, a cleverly understated reworking of the track produced by Clifton ‘Specialist’ Dillon and remixed by Felix Jaehn infused the track with its tropical house sound and helped power the momentum that has made the song a global phenomenon.
