NEWS: A WEED delivery app - could it happen in the UK?

Marijuana sellers are following Uber's example

If you want to get marijuana delivered to your door in any one of the 23 US states where it's currently legal for medicinal purposes, chances are you'll soon be able to to do it on your smartphone.

That's because a number of apps have jumped on the Uber bandwagon - using geolocation to pair sellers with buyers.

Canary, Eaze, Grassp and Meadow are all examples of apps billing themselves as the "Uber of Weed".

However, given the variations of state laws in the USA governing how and where pot can be bought and sold these apps have - unsurprisingly - been hit with plenty of criticism.

Uber itself has skirted the rules by allowing anyone with a phone and a car to set themselves up as a taxi. Plenty of taxi and limousine companies cry foul over the apps' lack of regulation.

But a prohibited, hallucinogenic substance is another matter entirely.

Buying grass with a smartphone app is different to hitching a ride

Even the tech companies themselves have taken a bit of a stance on pot pedlars.

MassRoots.com, a social network based around weed, claims Apple booted its app off the App Store and started a petition to get the Cupertino-based company to relax its online policies.

Apple also blacklisted iPhone drug dealing game Weed Firm after it rocketed to the top of the App Store.

Of course, over this side of the pond the stage is set a little differently.

Cannabis is a class B drug and the Home Office has said it has no plans to legalise it or allow it to be used medicinally.

However, it's not a case of an inability to get hold of weed on a technical level.

"Drugs are the ultimate capitalist commodity," Dr Adam Winstock, a consultant psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist at King's College London told Mirror Online.

"If you look at who's now marketing through Silk Road or other dark net markets, it's increasing because of convenience."
