When ITV viewers noticed her blotchy make-up, added it to her recent hospital stay and then saw a bare left hand, many started speculating her seven-year marriage to Stephen Belafonte was in tatters.
Next came the silence from Mel as dark rumours surrounded her, with some saying Stephen had attacked his wife.

Mel made no statement after appearing slightly off key on December 14 X Factor live final. But tell tale details about the turbulent state of the pair's fiery union emerged from a magazine interview given just a week before.
Mel, whose full name is Melanie Brown, spoke about the couple having a big argument after arriving three hours late for a shoot.
She said she was "not in the best of moods", explaining: I walked in p****d off because I had a big row with my husband about stupid stuff.
