GADGET: Just some juice please! Starbucks brings wireless charging to stores

Just some juice please! Starbucks brings wireless charging to stores

If you and your phone need a bit of a boost, nip down to your local Starbucks. The omnipresent java-monger has installed wireless charging points in 10 of its stores, so you can juice up your phone while sipping a latte.

Starbucks has partnered with Powermat. Just collect a 'ring' from the till and connect it to your handset. Then place your phone on the table where you see a 'spot' marked. And there you go, it should power up the battery.

Certain devices don't need the ring, but there are only a handful of them. You can see a list on the Powermat website.

The Starbucks stores taking part in the trial are all in central London we're afraid, so the rest of the country will have to wait for a more widescale rollout.

Starbucks isn't the first to bring wireless charging to its outlets. McDonald's recently teamed up with Air Charge to offer Qi chargers in its restaurants. All 600 are spread over 50 locations, and again, most of them are in London. Looks like it's one rule for Londoners, and another for everyone else. You'll also need a compatible phone like the LG G3 or Nokia Lumia 930.

Still, it's a step in the right direction.
