It has been a rough two weeks for South African hip hop and it all started with the MTVBase SA’s Hottest MC’s Top 10 announced two weeks ago.
Caspper Nyovest who recently won three awards at the the Channel O Africa Music VideoAwards 2014 at the weekend has released a scathing attack on the panellists and other rappers on the list of MTVBase SA’s Hottest MC’s made two weeks ago. The name of the track available for download since last week is titled Beef.
Reason (Sizwe Moeketsi) was the first rapper to take to the booth to voice his discontent with the list of SA’s best rappers when he dropped a freestyle rap showing his discontent with his sixth place placing on the list, with lyrics like “I’m the best! F**k em all!! Nigga I’m the best!
In the song Nyovest raps, “I am cool being number two, but I am richer than number one”, (referring to rapper K.O who came in at number 1, while he came in second place).
The song opens with a Pulp Fiction scene where actor Samuel Jackson as Jules is asking Brett to describe Marcellus Wallace amid gun shots as he shoots Brett in the shoulder and the famous “I double dare you” line.
The award winning rapper continues his tirade against his number one nemesis AKA when he says: “Man what’s wrong with these OGs (Amu and other hip hop panellists) =. Don’t act like you forgot what you told me about that coloured nigger…I should have mentioned it, but I do not want to provoke beef”.
The song ends with an angry do not tell me how you feel- tell me how many CDs you sold and how many of your niggers did what I did…”.
The judging panel made their decisions according to criteria that also looked at not only the artists’ lyricism, but also impact, sales figures, buzz and style.
Sizwe Dhlomo mediated the discussion between MC and producer Amu, while the likes of Mo Flava, Loot Love; Kevin Mdubeki; and DJ Vigilante, Slikour and Tumi Molekane were part of the judging panel who presided and deliberated on the overall winner.
The song is available for free download here
