On Saturday (November 15), Lifetime aired its Aaliyah biopic, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, a movie that was predestined to be bad. The script was sourced from Christopher John Farley's 2001 biography, Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, and executive produced by Wendy Williams. As expected, the negative feedback from fans and artists (Timbaland urged fans not to watch the movie on Twitter) caused “#LifetimeDisrespectsAaliyah” to become a trending topic at one point.
Aaliyah’s family, who controls the rights to her recordings, did not grant permission for producers to use them, which meant signature songs from her late-1990s — “Are You That Somebody?,” “4 Page Letter,” “If Your Girl Only Knew” — are nowhere to be heard.
It has been a controversial journey for the biopic. Not only was Aaliyah's family opposed to the movie, its first star, Disney Channel actress Zendaya Coleman, dropped out of the project amid controversy over her casting and her own personal issues over the production.
Hopefully, at some point, there will be another way to accurately celebrate Aaliyah in film....
