Another day, another music streaming service launching to try and take on the likes of Spotify. This one is slightly different however: while YouTube Music Key still charges a monthly subscription, it also gives you access to all the music videos you could want, with no adverts. Is that worth paying for?
While YouTube is about video, lots of users visit the site simply to listen to their favourite tracks for free, and Google is acknowledging that with its new service, which just launched in private beta. For $7.99 per month (£5, but free for the first six months to early beta testers) you can watch all the high quality music videos you want with no pre-roll ads ever, as well as store them on your phone to watch offline. On top of that, you get access to Google Play Music, the company’s more traditional Spotify rival, as well.
YouTube Music Key is launching in the US and a select (but currently unclear) number of European countries, and you can register to get on the waiting list for an invite here. While it sounds like a bargain on paper, it’s a bit of a hazy proposition, and without the multi-platform support of the likes of Spotify, it’ll be interesting to see if it takes off.
That said, YouTube still has Taylor Swift songs in its library, while Spotify does not, so if you want to listen to 1989 (Admit it, you secretly do) with no adverts you may only have one option.
