GADGETS: New Oculus Rift headset makes virtual reality more realistic than ever

A new Oculus Rift headset has been unveiled! Named Crescent Bay, it boasts a better display, better head tracking, as well as integrated audio. Virtual reality just got a lot more realistic.

Oculus drew back the curtain on the new device over the weekend in Hollywood. It promised it had made a "massive leap" in virtual reality.

So what's new? The screen gives better graphics, it has built-in headphones, and it's lighter and more comfortable to wear. The 360-degree head tracking also means there's no lag or delay when you turn your head – this lets you keep up with the action, and also means you don't feel sick when playing. Bonus!

It should mean you forget you're wearing a headset altogether, and are transported to the virtual world, making games more immersive than ever.

Oculus showed off the new headset with a series of demos, including a team of armoured soldiers fighting off a huge mech, a Tyrannosaurus Rex approaching, and standing on top of a skyscraper. We're getting vertigo just typing those words.

There's still no word on when the Oculus Rift will go on sale, or how much it will cost. But here's hoping it's soon and not that much.
