GADGETS: Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini, Microsoft fitness tracker, Google Glass banned and more: Gadget digest

This week has absolutely flown by, with loads of fantastic gadgets popping up over the past couple of days. We’ve seen the coolest wearable tech, some impressive phones and tablets, and there have been plenty of surprises in the headlines along the way. Read on to see the best gadget stories of the week in our gadget digest.

The best wearable tech! Wearable tech is the in thing at the moment, and we’re particularly excited by the world’s first wraparound smartwatch. With an absolutely huge display, the Moment Smartwatch looks more like a futuristic bracelet than a watch, and it even manages to cram in a QWERTY touchscreen keypad.

Microsoft also surprised us this week, introducing a fitness tracker for Apple iPhone owners. Granted, it’ll also work with Android devices, but we were a bit shocked to see Redmond supporting its rival’s devices – has hell frozen over? Could that make the Microsoft fitness tracker the wearable to have? Only time will tell!

Not a lot comes close to the Tetris T-shirt for coolness though, with this epic homemadecreation offering a giant-sized game of Tetris in celebration of the title’s 30th birthday.

It’s not all good news for wearables though, as this was also the week that Google Glasswas banned from UK cinemas. Although new owners may be bemoaning their lot, it’s easy to see why cinemas aren’t happy about the super specs, as they’re also capable of snapping and recording video – potentially making it easy to pirate new films.

A good week for phones

We’ve been waiting for the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini for ages, and the South Koreanmanufacturer finally announced its new baby this week. With a 4.5-inch Super AMOLEDscreen, quad-core 1.4GHz processor and 1.5GB of RAM, it may not match the spec of the full Samsung Galaxy S5, but it still looks like a stunner.

Android L (4.4.4) is on the way in the next few weeks, and it looks increasingly like the HTCOne M8 and M7 will be among the first of the existing smartphones to enjoy the update.

If you fancy a new blower but don’t have lots of cash, Samsung’s latest range of Galaxy smartphones could be ideal. You’ll be able to pick from the Samsung Galaxy Core 2, Samsung Galaxy Young 2 and Samsung Galaxy Trend 2, and all look like being a bit of a bargain.

Introducing the latest tablets

Lots more of us are switching to tablets when it comes to gaming – it’s certainly a lot more convenient than carrying around a dedicated games handheld like the Sony PS Vita. That’s why we’re happy to see a filing for an upcoming Nvidia Shield tablet, which could offer portability to go with its uncompromising gaming prowess.

And just in case you missed our story earlier today, we’ve also spotted some outrageous specs for the upcoming Google Nexus 9. 64-bit processing, 5GB of RAM and a high-res screen? Yes please!

And in other news…

We’ve seen plenty of smart lightbulbs before, but they’re generally pretty expensive. The latest smartbulb from General Electric looks like changing things though, offering remote control from anywhere in the world via your smartphone. It’s ideal for making people think your home is occupied, even when you’re away on holiday!

If that doesn’t float your boat, how about the new Ouya Mad Catz microconsole? There’s a lot to love about its incredibly powerful hardware and 4K video capabilities!
