Wearable fans, your time has arrived: Google has just announced that, finally, its GlassExplorer program is officially kicking off in the UK! That means you’ll be able to get your hands on a prototype version of the futuristic Google Glass wearable, all before it officially launches to the rest of the public. Is it about time Glass hit over here? Read on for all the details!
Google’s just revealed that its Glass Explorer programme is headed over to the UK, giving you a chance to get to grips with the glasses-style wearable to complement your daily life, without having to fake your address and pay hefty import fees from the US. You’ll be able to get Gmail, Google Now, search, Navigation and more delivered straight to you retina, and you’ll be able to communicate with your friends and family without even touching yourphone or tablet with just a few spoken commands, just like the current US Explorers.
The launch of the Explorer programme in the UK also brings in four more partners: The Guardian, Star Chart, Zombies Run and Goal.com, all of which are making specialised Glass apps to go with the UK launch. Star Chart lets you look up at the sky and be given details on stars, planets and constellations above you, while Zombies, Run! is a Glass version of the popular running audio adventure, that tells the story straight to your Glass headphones.
Unfortunately, just like the Explorer programme in the States, getting in will deal a hefty blow to your wallet. In fact, it’ll set you back a cool £1,000 to be in with the chance of trialling Google’s wearable headset, and you need to be over 18 and have a credit card to have a shot of nabbing one. That said, if you’re really keen to give Glass a go, and you’re over the age of 18, you can RSVP directly to Google to request a demo at a Basecamp in London, opening this Friday and Saturday.
We’re shortly off to Google itself to check out the latest UK addition – stay tuned for more info as soon as we hear it.
