Floyd Mayweather is scheduled to put his undefeated record on the line Saturday night against 35-3 Marcos Maidana — but on the eve of the fight, the two sides could not come to an agreement over Maidana’s gloves. Maidana intended to wear custom blue-and-white Everlast gloves, but the gloves were not approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Mayweather was upset at the amount of padding in the knuckle-area of the glove, and had a shouting match with Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia.

Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe threatened to call off the fight, but Maidana’s camp insisted the fight will go on as planned.

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer explained that although Maidana’s gloves may be the correct weight, the distribution of the weight within the glove can make a huge difference.

“When you have gloves, to make them eight ounces is easy, the question is where’s the weight distributed. You can have gloves with eight ounces, and two ounces (in the front) and six ounces (in the back).”

Showtime Sports executive Stephen Espinoza told USA TODAY Sports Saturday afternoon that the glove dispute may not have been settled, but the fight will definitely occur.

“The fight will proceed. I don’t know the particulars of how it was settled or what was settled, nor am I really that interested. I just know the event is going to proceed. I’m not concerned. It is not in jeopardy.”
