GADGET: Return of the Sony Alpha A77! Sony’s mid-range DSLR offers insane speed and video skills!

The Sony Alpha A77 had a lot to offer keen photographers when it launched back in 2011, with a smart fixed internal mirror that allowed it to shoot faster than the majority of DSLRs out there. Sony today announced the return of its impressive shooter, in the form of the cunningly titled Sony Alpha A77 II, and once again it’s incredibly quick. This time, it also has impressive video skills as well though!

There’s a 24.3-megapixel Exmor sensor at the heart of the Sony Alpha A77 II – just like the original – but Sony has coupled it with a techy-sounding Bionz X image chip from its more expensive Alpha A7 and A7R cameras. This should result in better photographs, but the Alpha A77 II really stands out from the crowd when it comes to speed.

It has a brand new focusing system, for instance, with a faintly absurd 79 autofocus points, so you should be able to capture the object of your photograph in detail whatever you’re shooting.

It’s the burst mode that really impressed though, with the Alpha A77 II capable of shooting up to 60 full-res images at a maximum of 12fps – could it be the best semi-affordable DSLRyet when it comes to sports photography or action shots? Even if you’re just getting to grips with photography and the majority of your shots leave something to be desired, shooting that many leaves a cracking chance of capturing something David Bailey would be proud of!

The Sony Alpha A77 II also makes a step up when it comes to ISO, and it’s now capable of shooting at 25,600 ISO – again perfect for action shots or images in poorer light.

We’re also seeing more and more DSLRs offering handy video skills too, and the SonyAlpha A77 II doesn’t disappoint in this area – not least because of its autofocus capabilities and continuous face-detection. Add in the ability to shoot 1080p video, and the A77 II could be just as useful as a full-time camcorder.

Other features on the Alpha A77 II include a 3-inch LCD that offers three different viewing positions and NFC, letting you share your snaps wirelessly with other NFC-enabled gadgets. Set to launch in June, the Sony Alpha A77 II will cost $1,800 (£1,070) with a 16-50mm f/2.8 lens, or $1,200 (£710) body only. Would you still buy a DSLR, or do you think your smartphone offers most of the functionality more of the time? Leave a comment and let us know.
