Smartwatches seem to be all the rage at the moment, so it’s easy to forget they’ve actually been around in one form or another for years. Microsoft was one of the first real innovators around a decade ago, and hot off the back of acquiring Nokia, the companycould be about to revisit its roots and release a brand new smartwatch. A brightly coloured, ultra-cool Lumia smartwatch, perhaps?
According to a patent application released by the US Patent Office, Microsoft could be readying a new smartphone set to take on the likes of Samsung, LG and rumoured upcoming products from SPOT tech was included on watches from a host of manufacturers like Fossil, Suunto and Tissot, providing information including email synchronisation, MSNNews, weather and more over FM waves.
Things have obviously come on a long way since then though, and we can’t wait to see what Microsoft has up its sleeve; imagine a Lumia-branded smartwatch, packing in the stylish designs and robust build we’ve come to expect from the Lumia smartphone range…
The patent itself shows up a watch that provides a “personal information system”, with the watch also including “an optical sensor, electrical connector and data connector”. It’s likely the Microsoft smartwatch will act as a fitness tracker then, with music playing abilities, a connection to your smartphone and messaging also looking likely.
There are currently no other details on Microsoft’s smartwatch, but it’d certainly be a fantastic way to kick off a new era of Lumia devices, and it’d be great to see another huge company going head to head with Samsung and Apple.
What features would make you buy a Lumia smartwatch?
