GADGET: Look no hands! Kohler Touchless toilet helps you say goodbye to germs!

It’s all too easy to spread germs around once you start touching stuff in the bathroom – even if you’re something of a clean-freak. The latest gadget from Kohler should make things a lot cleaner though, and although toilets will never be cool, one you can flush without even touching is pretty impressive!

The Kohler Touchless Toilet uses electromagnetic tech to flush without actually having to touch a button, handle or any other part of the loo. All you need to do when you want to flush is wave your hand around over the toilet itself, Harry Potter-style (although perhaps without a wand), and the toilet flushes itself.

Better yet, the touchless tech isn’t just restricted to Kohler toilets, and will be made available for your very own bathroom, as a standalone kit that can be added for $99 (£58). The sensor itself is a small module that sits inside the cistern, out of sight and out of mind. If only it were so easy to integrate gesture control into all our other household gadgets; afridge that opens when you wave at it? Don’t mind if we do!

If you’ve ever used a public toilet you’ll probably be thinking “what’s new?” round about now though – with toilets that flush themselves as soon as you move pretty commonplace when out and about.

Kohler’s tech is slightly different, however, eschewing beams that flush the toilet when you move (pretty unreliable as you may just be reaching for the toilet paper!), and instead using new sensing tech on top of the toilet, which the company claims is both “extremely accurate and reliable”.

There is a possible downside though. With four AA batteries in the sensor lasting between six and twelve months, the chances are you’ll forget all about the fact your toilet even needselectric power. Could be embarrassing if the batteries give up the ghost when you have no more replacements lying around… Then again, you could always take the lid off, and yank the chain yourself!
