Fitness trackers are the hot new trend in tech right now, even if Nike no longer thinks so, but there’s no doubt that some of their features – not to mention their pricetags – mean they’re aimed at adults. But why should they get all the fun? Leapfrog’s just announced the LeapBand, a fitness tracker aimed at the younger members of the family.
While the LeapFrog LeapBand logs steps and tells the time just like a Misfit Shine, it injects an extra element of fun for kids (LeapFrog says they’re designed for kids ages 4 to 7) – the more active they are, the more points they earn to spend on the Tamagotchi style virtual pet that lives on the tracker, unlocking new mini games and rewards.
Kids can choose from eight different pets (which some will recognise from LeapFrog’s Pet Pal franchise) and 50 different games, with activities that most adults would think twice about acting out in public (“Walk like a crab” or “spin like a helicopter”) but are more likely to get your young’uns active since you can’t simply tell them to go out for a jog.
Sound fun? The LeapFrog LeapBand goes on sale in August in green, pink, blue and orange, priced up at just £29.99 – a fraction of the price of a new FuelBand. Hopefully that’ll keep them occupied during the long school summer holidays.
