GADGET: John Lewis' JL9000 own-brand smart TVs run webOS, are made by LG

John Lewis' JL9000 own-brand smart TVs run webOS, are made by LG

John Lewis has announced its own range of smart TVs to be sold in stores. The sets are part of the JL9000 range, and are made by LG. As such, they run the webOS platform.

The TVs come in three sizes: 49, 55 and 60 inches. A 50-watt, 2.2-channel soundbar plus subwoofer comes built into the stand. With that room-filling sound, you shouldn’t need any additional speakers to get the real cinema treatment.

webOS brings together a host of on-demand TV shows, films, sport and music services. It even has a cartoon character called BeanBird, who’ll help guide you through getting it up and running.

Apps available for webOS include: Demand 5, Now TV, BBC iPlayer, Netflix, YouTube, Skype, Twitter and Facebook.

You can check your social media accounts while still watching TV, too.

The ‘Magic’ remote recognises gesture controls, so you can scroll, wave, or just speak to control it.

It also comes with two pairs of 3D glasses, so you can watch films and TV in the third dimension. And you can video call friends over Skype, thanks to the 8-megapixel webcam.

John Lewis can install the TV for you, and give you a 15-minute tutorial on how to use it.

Prices start at £1,399 for the 49-inch model, up to £2,199 for the 60-incher.
