GADGET: Tag Heuer mobile runs on sun rays, costs the earth

Tag Heuer is best known for its pricey range of upper-class watches for those crippled by bags of cash, but the Swiss manufacturer also occasionally dabbles in luxury phones as well. Phones like the new Tag Heuer Meridiist Infinite, a gadget that can hold its charge on standby infinitely (see what they did there?) using solar power alone.

As with other Tag Heuer devices, it’s the design and quality that screams for your attention initially. The Meridiist Infinite looks like an olde worlde feature phone, and it’s the first high-end phone we’ve seen for ages with an actual keypad (BUTTONS! Remember them?). Love or loathe the way it looks though, there’s no arguing with the titanium, carbon andrubber materials used to lovingly craft it. They’re the very same materials patented by Tag Heuer back in 1911, in fact, for the ‘Time of Trip’ aircraft and automobile chronograph, highlighting the heritage and history behind the company.

The Meridiist Infinite isn’t just about tradition though, as it also packs in some pretty clevertech. It’s capable of trickle-charging itself, thanks to a transparent (or magical sounding “invisible”, according to Tag Heuer) photovoltaic cell between the sapphire crystal screen and the LCD elements. The result is a phone that can maintain its battery life indefinitely, as long as it’s occasionally exposed to natural or even artificial light.

Infinite battery life (in standby mode) aside though, the Meridiist Infinite looks pretty similar to Tag Heuer’s existing Meridiist range, which means you’ll find an additional secondary screen on the top of the phone, reflecting the company’s status as a timepiece maker. Don’t expect many other features though, as the Meridiist Infinite is purely a regular mobile phone – no apps, no downloadable games and nothing else to trouble the Samsung Galaxy S5 or Apple iPhone 5S.
