GADGET: DJI Phantom 2 Vision+: Insane quadrocopter packs GPS skills!

There’s something outrageously cool about photography drones – radio-controlled flying contraptions that can film and beam everything back down to earth, and the DJI Phantom 2Vision+ is even more amazing than most. From its integrated GPS tech, to the ability to preview live video from miles away (OK, 2,300ft, but it’s still impressive!), the Phantom 2 Vision+ is an expensive toy that’s worth breaking open the piggy bank for, and maybe your neighbour’s too.

The overall look of the Phantom 2 Vision+ is pretty similar to DJI’s previous model – the Phantom 2 – but looks can be deceptive, and the Phantom 2 Vision+ packs in a lot of newtechnology.

There’s integrated GPS for a start, helping the Phantom 2 Vision+ to stay on course in windspeeds of up to 25mph; try controlling one and stopping it from ending up upside down in the nearest tree when it’s blowing a gale, and it’s a feature you’ll soon appreciate! You can even set a course automatically using GPS.

The tech that works alongside the GPS is even more impressive though. You can now useautomatic safety controls, so you can avoid flying into restricted air spaces. It may be obvious when you’re standing next to Heathrow, but there are lots of smaller airfields and no-fly zones that you may not be aware of, especially when the Phantom 2 Vision+ is some 2,300ft away from you.

The latest version of DJI’s quadrocopter also gets more impressive photography skills, with a new 14-Megapixel camera capable of shooting 1080p video at 30fps. There’s an accompanying app for the Phantom 2 Vision+ that lets you watch live video as you shoot, so not only will you be able to make sure you get the footage you want, but it will also make the Phantom 2 Vision+ easier to fly, watching where you’re going at the same time.

Just don’t expect the Phantom 2 Vision+ to come cheap; prices start at $1,299 (£783), so you’ll need to be fairly serious about your aerial photography. If you don’t mind compromising on quality or features, you could have just as much fun with the Parrot AR Drone 2.0, which costs a fraction of the price.
