GADGET: Vodafone Smart 4 mini smartphone: Dual-core processing and Android Jellybean at an amazing £50!

The Samsung Galaxy S5 hit the shops today, but brilliant though it is, it’s still too expensive for lots of us. If you’re after something considerably more wallet-friendly, leaving you enoughcash to enjoy other gadgets as well, how about the new Vodafone Smart 4 mini? With a staggeringly low price of just £50, we’re already tempted!

So what does the Vodafone Smart 4 mini have to offer? As the name hints, there’s a 4-inch screen, showing off a respectable 480×800 resolution. Sure, it’s no high-definition wonder, but with a relatively small screen size, and 230 pixels per inch, it’s still a heck of a lot more impressive than most models at this price.

The Smart 4 mini runs Android 2.2 Jellybean, and crams in a dual-core 1.3GHz processor. Along with 512MB of RAM, it should be enough to power Vodafone’s baby along at a decent lick. Compared to other budget Android phones – like the Samsung Galaxy Pocket Neo, the Smart 4 mini is positively next-generation, with Samsung’s 850MHz processor and 3-inch screen looking completely outclassed.

There’s 3G and Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, and Google Maps also comes pre-installed on the Vodafone Smart 4 mini. The 4GB of internal storage may look a bit limited, but you can also easily add another 32GB via microSD. All this should combine to make a grown-up smartphone experience, and it’s difficult to ignore the Vodafone Smart 4 mini at just £50 on Pay as you go.

What of the competition though? Even at twice the price, Vodafone looks to have rivals on the run, with well regarded smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Fame also looking out of its depth. Single-core processing, a 3.5-inch screen and much lower resolution help to highlight just how much the Vodafone Smart 4 mini has to offer!

Of course, there are more robust rivals out there – £50 more will get you a 720p screen on the incredible Motorola Moto G these days, and there are rivals looming, such as the impressive Xiaomi Redmi Note, a turbocharged phablet with a 1.4GHz processor, 13-Megapixel camera and a starting price of just £78. The Redmi Note could certainly give the Smart 4 mini a run for its money if it came to the UK, but in the meantime it looks like the Vodafone Smart 4 mini could have the truly affordable smartphone sector to itself.
