When it comes to gaming on your phone, it’s either swiping bliss or on-screen button rage, but luckily, there’s a fix on the way to make the latter pains go away. It’s called the G-Pad, a simple silicone sleeve that slides around your iPhone, and brings a d-pad and physical buttons to turn your iPhone into the ultimate Game Boy handheld. Fancy one of these?
Designer Aws Jan is attempting to turn retro gaming on your iPhone the best it can possibly be with his new project, the G-Pad. He’s looking to raise $16,000 (£9,570) over on crowdfunding site Indiegogo to turn his physical gaming dreams into a reality, and the simple silicone sleeve just slides onto your iPhone 5, 5s, 5c or iPod touch to work with a iOSGame Boy emulator called GBA4iOS that doesn’t require you to jailbreak or hack your iPhone to game on the go.
It’s a simple idea that lines up perfectly with the emulator’s on-screen buttons, and thecapacitive material on the inside of the sleeve presses the on-screen buttons giving you tactile controls on the go – that means no additional software is needed, no Bluetooth pairing is needed, and if other gaming apps let you customise your on-screen controls, you could use the G-Pad with those too.
It’s definitely a slicker alternative to the recent wave of bulky iPhone game controllers that have come out recently, such as the Logitech Powershell and Moga Ace Power, although you won’t get the flexibility and wealth of buttons that the larger controllers give – but if you just want to play Game Boy games on the go, it’s the perfect alternative.
If you’re interested in the G-Pad, you can plonk down $13 (£8) for an early bird price in black, grey or green, while it’s set to retail for $33 (£20) – and if the project hits its production goal, you can expect to see the silicone sleeves roll out in August. Will you be contributing to the G-Pad project, or do you prefer some of the other iOS game controllers that have come out recently?
