Unlike most manufacturers, Sony realises just because you may want a smallersmartphone, it doesn’t mean you want to cut out all the bells and whistles, or accept second-rate performance. That means we’ve now got the excellent Xperia Z1 Compact, and a compact version of the Xperia Z2 could also be on the way in the form of the leaked Sony Xperia A2. Want.
The Xperia Z2 itself is a monster of a handset, from the specs – including a 2.3GHzprocessor, 20.7-megapixel snapper capable of recording 4K video, and stereo speakerswith noise cancelling tech – to the actual size, with a stonking great 5.2-inch screen. Imagine if it were smaller, though?
That could well be about to happen, according to a Sony brochure spotted by The Droid Guy, which shows off the more compact Sony Xperia in all its glory. And it could be the phone plenty of us have been waiting for; let’s face it, not everybody wants a handset like the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Mega – a phone so large you’ll need a rucksack to drag it around in (almost)!
At 4.3 inches, the Sony Xperia A2 looks to be a lot more pocket friendly than the Xperia Z2, and it also looks like being another water resistant gadget available in a range of different colours (including grey black, white, lavender and orange).
Whether the Xperia A2 gets to keep the Xperia Z2’s impressive camera tech remains to be seen, although if you’re looking for a high-spec 4.3-inch smartphone with a 20.7-megapixel snapper you can already opt for the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact.
The specs that do look likely for the Xperia A2 include a Snapdragon 800 or 801 chipset, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, so you’ll still get plenty for your money despite going for a smaller smartphone.
There’s currently no word on pricing, availability or other specs, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more.
And in the meantime, we’d love to know what you think; should smaller handsets be paired back and more affordable, or do you want to see all the same features crammed in, opting for a more compact smartphone simply because it fits into your pocket better?
