GADGET: Say hello to Tubecore Duo Modular, the upgradeable speaker!

It’s a fab time for modular gadgets, with Google’s ongoing modular smartphone projectcatching the attention of just about everybody in the tech world. Google’s phone is just a small bit of the puzzle though, and as far as we’re concerned the more upgradeable gadgets out there the better! It means you won’t have to bin them when you want to add the latest, coolest features, or even fancy a change of colours. The Tubecore Duo Modular speakers follow this ethos, with an embedded computer and other design features that can be modded to your heart’s content.

The speakers themselves look fantastic; the tech within may be far more than your average set of speakers, but the highly individual exterior carries more than a hint of retro about it, blending brushed aluminium and an eye-catching wooden finish perfectly. In-keeping with the modular theme, the Duo features a magnetic speaker cover that’s available in 10 standard colours, or you can also opt for a further 27 custom colours.

The retro theme continues to the controls on the Duo, with a single large brushed aluminium knob that lets you adjust volume and a host of different features. Tubecore adds: “With one knob you can adjust volume, switch inputs and set system preferences, while firmware updates allow you to create custom controls”. Quite how it’s possible to do all that with one button remains to be seen, but we can’t wait to find out.

Let’s face it though; we’re as taken by shiny gadgets as the next man, but it’s the sound of the Tubecore Duo Modular that really matters, and that’s where these wireless speakers should shine. They’re designed around a vacuum tube-driven preamp with a pair of tubes (visible in the centre of the speakers) promising to deliver “vintage studio hi-fi”. Along with a 24-bit DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) and the ability to filter the audio signal six times to remove excess noise, sound quality really should be top-notch.

The modular theme runs through to the very heart of the Tubecore Duo too, which features a Raspberry Pi computer to handle audio streaming, Bluetooth, USB support and more. The Pi in itself is obviously customisable enough, but you’ll also be able to upgrade to aUDOO Quad mini computer as well.

Pre-order now and you’ll be able to get hold of the basic Tubecore Duo for $479 (£285) – a big saving on the expected retail price of $649 (£386).

What features would you most like to upgrade in your speakers?
