Every now and again a new super-gadget comes along, promising to blow rivals out of the water. The Pentax 645Z medium format DSLR could do exactly that, cramming in a massive 51.4-Megapixel sensor and offering the ability to shoot snaps from afar with yoursmartphone!
It’s not just the pixel count that impresses on the Pentax 645Z either, as with other medium format shooters, the sensor itself is also physically larger than most DSLRs’ – in this case 1.7x bigger than a regular 35mm full-frame sensor. That means pixels themselves can be larger, allowing in more light, and your photographs should be more impressive as a result.
The Pentax 645Z really is a monster when it comes to photography specs, with Pentax adding a maximum ISO of a staggering 204,800 – who needs a flash to shoot in the dark?!
It’s the ability to control the Pentax 645Z wirelessly with your smartphone that really catches our attention, though you’ll need to add the curiously named ‘FluCard’ to get started. The SD card packs in Wi-Fi, and will also let you share images wirelessly as well.
The monster Pentax is no super-small SLR like the Canon EOS 100D, let alone CompactSystem Camera-sized like the Olympus Pen E-P5, and instead is an absolute beast in terms of size. Never mind two hands to hold it, it looks like you’ll need both feet, and a little help from your friend as well!
The ergonomics do look spot on though, with a huge grip to help you comfortably handle the Pentax 645Z if you do decide to whip it off a tripod and take it out and about. Add in dust-proof, weather-resistant, cold-resistant build quality, with 76 different weather seals helping to keep it working whatever the conditions, and the Pentax really is an impressive bit of kit!
As it should be, considering the price! At £6,799 for the body only (you’ll need to cough up for the lens as well), you’ll be needing deep pockets if you want to enjoy the Pentax 645Z! Still, it’s nice to dream… And it could always be worse, Hasselblad’s H4D-200MS medium format shooter is an eye-watering £26,400!
