We love checking out new Kickstarter projects, be they rubber band machine guns or video conferencing cat toys, and now there’s another campaign live to test our wallets and will power. The Lunecase iPhone case is a fab example, using excess iPhone energy to offer LED notifications. So in addition to protecting your iPhone, it also makes it a lot easier to see when you’ve got messages or incoming calls.
The Lunecase itself looks like nothing more complex than a regular iPhone case – there are no cables, no battery and no connectors to suggest it packs any other features up itsprotective sleeve.
Snap it onto the rear of your iPhone though, and it’ll instantly tell you if you have any notifications, lighting up like a Christmas tree (OK, a very small, rectangular and not very bright Christmas tree!) for any new alerts.
The designers explain: “By utilising the electromagnetic energy, we can eliminate the need for batteries and connections.” That almost seems like free energy to us – after all, your iPhone isn’t doing anything with it, so hats off to Lunecase for taking advantage.
Notifications show up in the form of LEDs on the rear of the case, with different icons lighting up depending on what’s happening – there’s both a message icon and an incoming call icon, so you’ll know what to look forward to before you even pick up your iPhone.
And don’t forget, although it looks great, and we love the idea of LED notifications (OK, the concept is slightly 1990s, but flashing notification lights always were useful, right?), at heart the Lunecase is still a protective case, helping to keep your iPhone free from scratches and looking like new.
Watch the Lunecase come to life!
The Lunecase is currently on Kickstarter, where the designers were attempting to raise $50,000 (£29,728). It looks like the Lunecase is one of the more popular offerings on Kickstarter though, as with 36 days still left to go, it’s already raised more than $51,998 (£30,916).
Although the cheapest deals have now gone, if you want to get in on the action a pledge of $39 (£23) will still get you a Lunecase for your iPhone 5c or iPhone 5/5s, with a choice of white or black available. With an expected retail price of $50 (£29), you’ll still be making asaving!
Would you buy the Lunecase though, or do you think you’ve already got the best iPhone case? Leave a comment and let us know what it is if so.
