GADGET: The light fantastic: Adobe Lightroom photo editing hits iOS

Photography fans have always been well served by the iPad, with Apple’s venerable tabletproving ideal for sharing and showing off photographs on the move. It’s never been ideal for editing pics though, and although there are some handy apps on iTunes, the launch of Adobe Lightroom Mobile for iPad is a more than welcome addition. RAW image editing on the go? Don’t mind if we do!

Lightroom is a magical bit of software on Windows or OS X, turning iffy under-exposed snaps into something worthy of the Tate. The latest mobile version for iPad is available now, and it’s a powerful and feature-stuffed app capable of editing your photos minus the 4K monitor, mouse and keyboard.

You’ll need a full copy of Lightroom 5 on your PC or Mac before you can get started, but as soon as you edit photographs on your PC, images will automatically be saved in DNGformat. Log in using the iPad version of Lightroom, and you can use the regular RAW tools to edit a smaller synced file on the move.

Whenever you save the smaller version of your snap, the changes you make are logged and synced with Lightroom 5, so next time you log in on your PC or Mac you’ll see the updated version, all without having to sync huge files. There’s also a log of the changes you’ve made on Lightroom Moble, making it easy to revert to the original image if you have a change of heart and decide some peoples’ faces look slightly better in the dark…

You won’t be restricted to snaps saved on Lightroom 5 either, with the iPad version capable of accessing your photographs taken with the integrated camera, pics stored online and even images from your camera. And once you’ve finished, Lightroom also makes it easy to share with friends via Facebook and Twitter. Sounds good to us!

Once you’ve downloaded Lightroom 5, Lightroom Mobile for iPad is available for free now.

What features do you use most in Lightroom?
