GADGET: Imogen Heap’s high-tech glove lets you make music with your hands!

A few years ago, British musician Imogen Heap demonstrated on stage at a TED talk a pair of gloves that can make music with just hand gestures, and while it wasn’t available at the time, a Kickstarter campaign is now looking to turn the gloves into a full-blown reality. It’s called the Mi.Mu Glove, and the team behind it is looking for a cool £200,000 to turn it into a real product you can buy! Fancy making music just by waving your hands?

The Mi.Mu glove captures movements and postures of your hands, such as the orientation, the direction its facing and even sharp movements, such as drum hits, and along with a wireless board fitted with a gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer, it can send those movements and shapes to your computer using software in conjunction with the sensors – that means you’ll be be able to make music just by waving your hands, simulating drum hits or by making specific gestures. Not too dissimilar to the Mogees musical gizmo we spotted at this year’s Gadget Show Live, in other words.

The software gathers the information produced by the sensors, and they can be mapped to specific input messages which can then be used in music software – meaning it’s not just a glorified media remote. The cost of making music with your hands is not cheap though: for a complete, single glove, you’ll have to pledge at least £1,200, while a pair will run you back £2,400. If you prefer some DIY, you can pledge just £600 for the electronics and you can create your own glove, which should cut down on the costs, but it’s still a lot of cash for a piece of high-tech music-making equipment, and you won’t receive a complete glove until December – but would you be able to make the most of it? See it in action in the video below.
