GADGET: Gadget Show Live: Five of the weirdest gadgets you can see this week!

The Gadget Show Live is here! Hundreds of tech companies and inventors have filled the halls of the NEC to Birmingham with their incredible creations, and they’re ready for you to come check them out in person. The doors open to the public tomorrow but we got a little glimpse early on press day – read on for some of the weirdest gadgets we’ve spotted already – and keep your eyes posted on the Facebook page for more of what to expect this week. See you there!

DigiLegs

If you’ve ever wanted to recreate some of your favourite movies, like Alien or Predator, or just want to add some extra flair to your costumes, the weird and wonderful DigiLegs will be able to add an extra boost for you. Strap on a pair of the reverse stilt legs that transformyou into huge beast-like monster, and have fun stomping around your friends and traipsing up near vertical slopes like the eight-foot giant you’ll become – you’ll just need to bring your own costume.

Mogees

If you’re always drumming your fingers on the table and annoying your friends in the process, here’s a gadget that’ll turn that tic into something much more tuneful: meet Mogees, a small musical gadget that can turn almost anything into a musical instrument. Just attach the small sensor onto any surface or object you can think of, and once you’ve hooked it up to your smartphone, you can turn anything attached to into an instrument that you can strum, tap or slide along with.

It can detect different vibrations and taps, and tell the difference between each hit to give you different sound effects and volume, meaning you could be composing your next symphony using one of these – could this be your ticket to a chart topping hit? We were witness to an impromptu jam session with a bicycle. The device itself is set to go on sale by the end of the year after a successful Kickstarter campaign, but be sure to stop by the stand to see (and hear) it for yourself and get an early glimpse at its potential.

Big screen Flappy Bird!

Thought Flappy Bird was dead? Think again! The notoriously addictive, brutally unforgivingmobile game is at our very own Gadget Show Live in all its glory, only this time it’s live on a massive screen, so you won’t be tempted to throw your phone to the ground. Grab your friends to have a go at taking on the the infamous sidescroller together, or try and set the high score yourself – we’re sure you’ll be able to grab a robot massage later to ease your Flappy Bird-induced stress.

Double Robotics Telepresence Robot

You know what the problem with Skype HD video chats are? They’re too stationary. That’s Double Robotics’ rationale behind the Telepresence Robot, which you may run into roaming the halls of the National Exhibition Centre this week – it’s effectively an internet connected iPad perched on a remote control Segway-style vehicle, so you can trundle around your home (or more likely, cubicle-packed office) and check in on everybody rather than ping them an email they can easily ignore.

The good news is that unless your boss is feeling particularly flush or lazy, you won’t be seeing these in the halls of your workplace any time soon: they cost a cool £2,000, and the iPad is not included.

Rainshaders

While some of these inventions have only been enabled in recent years through the quantum leaps we’ve made on mobile computing, one of our favourite bits of kit on the show floor doesn’t require an energy source at all. The ingenious Rainshader umbrella is one of those “Why did nobody think of it before?” inventions. It won’t get blown inside out, and it’ll keep all of your body (backpack) dry, not just your noggin. Rainshaders have another key advantage too – they won’t stab any bystanders over six foot in the eye while you’re walking along marvelling at how dry you are either. Best of all, if the weather takes a turn for the worse in the Midlands, you can nab one yourself at the stand for just £20.
