GADGET: Death to the power brick! Meet the laptop charger the size of your phone's

Laptops, our trusty portable companions for getting work done on the go, are definitely handy, but one thing that’s a constant pain with them are their chargers. The hefty power packs that you have to lug around can sometimes feel like they weigh more than the device itself – but luckily, help is on the way. A new Kickstarter project is aiming to kill the power brick with a tiny, slimline charger that’s around the same size as your phone’s: Meet the Dart, a new gizmo that’s been dubbed the world’s smallest laptop adapter, and it can be yours for as little as $79 (£47)! And yes, it works with MacBooks. Read on for all the details!

Startup FINsix is aiming to make your hefty power brick a thing of the past: it’s come up with a tiny charger that can juice up your laptop and fit in your pocket, and it’s practically the same size as your regular phone charger. Known as the Dart, it packs in 65W of power, which is perfect for many slimline laptops out on the market right now, and it also has a USBport built-in to take care of your phone or tablet. The reason why it’s been made so small is that it uses an patented, highly efficient VHF (very high frequency) power converter, which is capable of cycling energy up to a thousand times faster than your typical adapter, without wasting any additional energy – and so capable of making the power brick much, much smaller.

The Dart itself comes in a variety of colours, including blue, magenta, silver, gunmetal, or orange and it’s designed to work with all major laptops. For early bird backers, you can grab a Dart for $79 (£47), while the regular Kickstarter price is $89 (£53), and the final retail priceis expected to be $99 (£59). If you’re a MacBook owner, you’ll have to shell out a little bit more cash – $148 (£88.55) to be exact, for an early bird price – for a compatible Dart, as FINsix has to purchase original Apple adapters to repurpose the MagSafe connectors. Thankfully, the company is hoping to work out a long-term agreement with Apple to bring down the costs, and make Mac fans even happier.

Currently, the Dart is built with a US plug, but it can work with different voltages and frequencies around the world, so all you need to do is add a plug adapter – but that should still make your bag a lot lighter anyway. The Dart itself is set to start shipping in the US around November this year, while the Global Dart pledge level that includes a matching plug adapter for $130 (£77), is set to ship next March – it looks like you’ll have to wait a little bit before you can lighten up your laptop bag.
