Heavy salute- Professor Thurstan Shaw- The Onunekwuluora of Nri. He completed the Igbo-Ukwu Archaeological finds of 1959, establishing the existence of an ancient civilisation in Igbo-land. He it was who discovered Iwo-Ileru man- the remains of a pre-historic man, at Iwo-Ileru near Akure, dated to 9000BC. He it was alongside Steve Daniels that discovered the Ugwuelle-Uturu (Okigwe) site dating back to 11000BC, showing Microlith works. He it was that established the Archaeology Department at the University of Ibadan in 1960, from where he retired in 1974. A committed Christian and unrepentant anti-Apartheid campaigner, he died in March 2013. Thank you sir, a great man walked this way.
