After their controversial exclusion (at least thus far) from the upcoming posthumous Aaliyah album, Missy Elliott and Timbaland
are out to stake their claim to cultural relevancy some seven years
since Missy’s last solo effort. With “9th Inning” and “Triple Threat,”
the powerhouse collaborators work hard to situate themselves in the 2012
hip hop landscape – which, statistically speaking, probably amounts to
somewhere between a 2 Chainz verse and a Drake hook – and seem to go
all-out on the effort front. Neither song quite reaches the instahit
status we’d expect after marinating for seven years, though "Triple
Threat" comes closer to the contemporary of adaptation of a classic
Timbaland beat that fans feel like they deserve. It’s a funny kind of
trip to see the duo making tracks you would hear sandwiched between MMG
drops on the radio, but these will certainly build even more anxious
anticipation for Missy's Block Party.
